General conferences are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings covering the entire spectrum of otolaryngology. These are provided by the otolaryngology faculty, residents and faculty members from appropriately related disciplines. See a sample monthly conference schedule here.
Special events
- Visiting Professorships - at least two per year.
- Soft Tissue Course - annual course providing residents with hands-on experience that accelerates mastery of surgical skills.
- Anatomy Dissection - Second year residents present head and neck cadaveric anatomy dissections each July to faculty and fellow residents.
- ORL Simulation Bootcamp - annual course featuring hands-on simulation emergency scenarios and interactive triage sessions for ORL residents.
Presentations and meetings
Our residents regularly present at major national meetings including the Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings (COSM), the Gulf States Regional Otolaryngology Conference and the annual American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS). Presentations include oral and poster presentations.
We also send our residents to a variety of training courses and national meetings such as the Society of University Otolaryngologist Head and Neck Surgeons annual meeting which allows them to learn about academic roles early in their career. Several of our residents have served in national leadership roles in the Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Combined degree opportunities
Residents in our program now have the option to complete one of several graduate degrees during their residency in lieu of their normal basic or clinical science research rotation. Our parent institution, the University of Mississippi, offers a Master of Business Administration. It is an online program which requires minimal if any on site attendance. Tuition up to six hours for the spring, fall, and summer trimesters are free for residents.
The University of Mississippi Medical Center offers a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. This program emphasizes clinical trials, patient/outcome research and translational human studies. The University of Mississippi Medical Center also offers a Clinical Investigation Pathway to provide supplementary training in research to establish an academic career at UMMC that includes a clinical/translational research focus.
Applicable fees will be covered by the Department just as we would provide funding for research projects. Residents enrolling in one of these programs will be allowed to use their protected research and elective time to devote to completing this course work.
Admission to the program will be competitively determined by the admissions committee and will be evaluated on the quality of the science proposed, the commitment of the mentor to the career development of the candidate, and on the overall impact of the training program on the applicant's career development. There is currently no tuition charged for UMMC employees who enroll in the program.
